MUSIC THERAPY IN ELDER CARE SETTINGS
"Matthew is not simply another entertainer, although he sings & plays the guitar beautifully and even plays the piano - he gently fosters conversation, interaction, and singing within and amongst those present. Thereby, elevating the whole hour into a truly meaningful experience - over and beyond being merely entertained for an hour. While I was there, I experienced Matthew indirectly helping those present adjust more deeply to their circumstances, build a sense of community amongst the group, help them to grieve and reconcile any recent losses as well as recognize & celebrate the current & past positiveness of their own lives.
Activity helps my father fill time and offer him a distraction - but it doesn't foster meaningfulness. He needs deeper human interaction for that--like most of us. While he gets this with me and when he comes home on Sundays, he voices wanting to connect better with his peers ... [though] he lacks the confidence and clarity to initiate such interaction. I think Matthew's music therapy could help everyone make these connections - meaningful connections that could transcend beyond the hour that he is there." - Kim - |
